Hardness Requirement of ASTM A694 F65 Flanges
  • Maximum Hardness:
    The specification does not prescribe a specific hardness number, but typically for Grade F65 Accoridng to NACE MR0175
    • Hardness should not exceed 235 HBW (Brinell Hardness)This corresponds approximately to:
      • ~22 HRC (Rockwell C)
    This is to ensure ductility and toughness in service.
Heat Treatment Requirement of ASTM A694 F65 Flanges

ASTM A694 F65 flanges must be heat treated to achieve the required mechanical properties:

  • Normalizing, Quenching, and Tempering:
  • Forging Temperature: The forging temperature range is 900 ~ 1200℃. Soak time should be minimized to avoid heavy scaling but sufficient for the center to reach the furnace temperature.
  • Normalizing: Heat to 890 ~ 960℃ for a time commensurate with the ruling section, then air – cool.
  • Hardening (Quenching): Heat to 890 ~ 960℃ for a time appropriate for the ruling section and quench in water.
  • Tempering: Re – heat to 540 ~ 650℃, hold for a time corresponding to the ruling section, and cool in still air. All grades of ASTM A694 must be heat – treated. For carbon steel and high – strength low – alloy steel (including F65), heat treatment may include normalizing, normalizing – and – tempering, or quenching – and – tempering. The tempering temperature is at least 540℃ (1000°F).
Charpy V-Notch Impact Test (CVN) of ASTM A694 F65
  • Required if specified by the purchase order or requirements of MSS SP-44,
  • chemical requirements, carbon equivalency, and impact testing limitations are required by MSS SP-44
  • Usually conducted at a specified temperature (e.g., -46°C for low-temperature service).
  • Minimum energy values must be met (commonly 27 J average, 20 J minimum single value per specimen).
